Training Opportunities
Training is available trough the Training Interpreters Project (TIP). a joint effort of Lincoln Action Program, Southeast Community College, Lincoln Interfaith Council, The Good Neighbor Center, and Interchurch Ministries of Nebraska to train participants to provide responsible, qualified interpretation and translation services in the community of Lincoln, Nebraska with emphasis on the medical field. Eligible participants will receive free training in core courses, which will enable them to begin working as sub-contactors with our interpreter/translator pool, LanguageLinc, LLC. (Individuals who do not qualify for free training can still access courses through SCC). Eligibility · Completed ESL Level 7 or placement test through SCC · High School diploma or equivalency · Household income at poverty level
Lincoln Action Program staff will also provide training sessions about interpretation as an individual contractor covering opportunities, business costs, fees, how interpreter pools work, working in small cultural communities, importance of confidentiality and overcoming customers fear of using interpreters. Business Plan Development at our facility will also be available based on the needs of the individual participant. Interpreter Training Courses through Southeast Community College The Role of the Interpreter 40-hr Course - Required. This practice-oriented course will immediately immerse students in focused discussions, lectures and problem-solving activities that highlight the everyday interpreting issues. In addition to the Role of the Interpreter training, students may choose specific training from two of the following courses: Introduction to Medical Interpreting– 40 hrs Introduction to Community and Law Enforcement Interpreting – 40 hrs Introduction to Court Interpreting– 40 hrs Intermediate Medical Interpreting 25-hr course. This course will provide instruction on basic medical terms, procedures, and pharmacies. At the conclusion of the course, assessment of students’ skills will be offered in Arabic, Bosnian, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese. Students who wish to further their skills and enhance their marketability can also choose from the following advanced trainings: Language Interpreting in: Ø Emergency Room Ø Obstetrics, Gynecology Ø Pediatrics, Neonatal Ø Behavioral Health
