The History of LanguageLinc Back in the spring and summer of 2003, Lincoln Action Program began an assessment process to identify community needs that could be addressed through a grant opportunity from the US Office of Community Services. Through a series of meetings with other agencies and community leaders, the need for qualified medical interpreters was targeted as an area where we could potentially make a significant impact. A partnership comprised of LAP, Southeast Community College, The Hispanic Center, Interchurch Ministries of Nebraska, Lincoln Interfaith Council and Faces of the Middle-East was eventually awarded a grant in the fall of 2003. This grant, the Training Interpreters Project, or TIP, had three major objectives: The first was to provide additional training resources for interpreters in the community. The second was to create opportunities for the rising number of low-income refugees and immigrants in Lincoln to decrease their reliance on public assistance. The third was to create a resource for both the community and the interpreters for the exchange of services. That was the beginning of LanguageLinc, an interpreter pool ran as a subsidiary of Lincoln Action Program. LanguaeLinc is just one part of a community wide effort that has been building momentum for the last few years to improve access to services for our refugee and immigrant populations. These efforts have recently become much more focused thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of advocates, health service providers and interpreters participating in the Medical Translation and Interpretation Leadership Group developed by The Community Health Endowment of Lincoln and the New Americans Task Force.
